St. Paul’s Cathedral – London

Upon leaving the Borough Market I was blessed with the opportunity to marvel at St. Paul’s Cathedral upon dusk.  Breathtaking moment!

Borough Market – London

Over the Christmas holiday I had the chance to visit the Borough Market located on Southwark St. in London.  If you’re into food markets or if you’re a foodie then you’ll find yourself in Heaven!  The market is visually appealing and offers various Local and International delicacies, not to mention that you can eat lunch/dinner while at the market.

My favorite stalls: Brindisa Spanish foods, La Pampa (argentinian empanadas), Fleur de Sel (french salt).

In the end I bought a bouquet of delicacies and had a picnic in my living room!

Shoot!

Today I had the opportunity to visit the Photographer’s Gallery in London, every time I go to a major city I make it my duty to find a gallery that will expose me to a new lens, way of thinking or simply that will transport me to a different era. Bulls eye!

“Shoot!” did just that… An exhibition on photography post WW1, in which normal subjects that attended the local fair grounds would participate on a shooting game to hit a target. Upon hitting the bulls eye the participant would receive a picture of themselves.

It was interesting to see the different faces, expressions, determination, and even frustration of the shooters through the pictures.

At the end of it all I was able to take home a target bullseye filled with holes, sadly I never hit the target despite all 9 attempts… But I leave with the memory of a great afternoon at the Photographer’s Gallery in which I too became a subject of the exhibition.

A Hong Kong Halloween

I’m not one to get into the Halloween spirit, in fact I stopped dressing up when I turned 11.  I was a cool kid, and cool kids didn’t wear costumes.  Little did I know that living in Hong Kong would spur in me a sentiment to celebrate all things that remind me of home.

Every year during the month of October Hong Kong transforms itself into a bright costume-candy-wig wearing extravaganza.  The Kongers don’t discriminate, it doesn’t matter if your 5 or 55, more likely than not you will be participating in some type of Halloween activity.

My friends were seriously getting into the Halloween spirit and were adamant that I join them for skme fun.  After a 30 second internal dialogue with the kid in me, the decision was made: I’m wearing a costume!  But where can I find it?  I asked my trusted source for Hong Kong living and she pointed me in the direction of Stanley St. in Central.

Going to Stanley St. was a cultural experience; the pebbled street is filled with colorful tin kiosks that resemble old school news stands.  The kiosks are equipped with everything – from wigs to face paint – to transform yourself into the character of you desire.  I wanted to choose something that fit my personality and my life style, since I travel so much I thought: Why not become a “Stewardess”?

The festivities began the weekend before Halloween which fell on a Wednesday this year.  The town, the people, the restaurants all celebrating in orange and black.  That night I went to several clubs to dance the night away, one of them even had a MJ “Thriller” flashmob.

But by far the most amazing moment of the night was entering “La Boca del Leon” (lion’s mouth): Lai Kwai Fung.  A note of warning: if you dislike crowded spaces, where dancing and swinging back and forth with the crowd just to get through is part of the fun, then avoid LKF… There were so many people dressed up, drinking, partying that you were literally devoured by the crowds.

But if you think that the partying is restricted to the weekend, you’re wrong…  On the actual day, the streets came alive once more to indulge in the celebration.  The police creates barricades to control the crowds and to prevent traffic jams.  It’s insane!

What a great first Halloween in The Kong.  I have to admit that dressing up was fun and carefree! I’m definitely doing it all again next year…  Hasta Pronto!

Shanghai – The European City of the East

Rewind to October 6th, I’m sitting at the dinner table with my girlfriends and all of a sudden I hear:  Do you want to come to Shanghai?!?!?  Ahhh, yeah! I just moved to Hong Kong, lucky me I had a … Continue reading
